BMW Shows Off Electric Concept Cars [video]
BMW AG on Friday presented two concept cars for the first generation of electric vehicles to be launched under its new sub-brand i starting in 2013, and said it will invest in a company named Parkatmyhouse, which offers a service to rent out private parking space via Internet or smart-phone application.
The upcoming i3 “will mark the launch of the first volume-produced car featuring bodywork largely made of carbon,” BMW research and development chief Klaus Draeger said during a presentation in Frankfurt.
BMW didn’t elaborate on the expected annual sales volume, but Chief Financial Officer Friedrich Eichiner noted that in terms of earnings per vehicle the new cars will contribute to the company’s targeted earnings before interest and taxes margin range of between 8% and 10%. Making electric cars economically viable despite expensive components such as the battery is a key challenge for the global auto industry.
The world’s largest luxury-car maker by sales volume will initially launch two new vehicles under the new sub-brand, the BMW i3 and the BMW i8, which will be launched in 2013 and 2014, respectively, and built at BMW’s German plant in Leipzig. The i3 will be a purely electric powered car for urban areas. The i8 will be based on the plug-in hybrid sportscar concept BMW Vision EfficientDynamics.
The new sub-brand is the outcome of BMW’s Project i, a task force established in 2007 to explore future mobility concepts and one of the Munich-based firm’s most important think tanks. It is a cornerstone of BMW’s plan to expand in the field of alternative drivetrains and green technology, making cars more environmentally friendly to comply with tightening emission regulations world-wide.
In November, BMW said it will invest around €530 million and create more than 1,000 jobs, together with its joint-venture partner SGL Carbon SE, as part of its plan to launch the new megacity vehicle and start producing carbon fiber components to reduce the vehicle’s weight.
Both companies forged a U.S. joint-venture to produce carbon fiber in Moses Lake, Wash.
BMW has named SB LiMotive, a joint venture between Samsung SDI Co. Ltd. and Robert Bosch GmbH, as the battery supplier for the new car. The battery is a key component for electric vehicles as it determines the range and performance of the car.
Subaru Impreza STI Cosworth CS400 [Reviews]
New Subaru Impreza STI Cosworth CS400 is the expected result of a car co-operation in recent times. Cosworth developed the first real road car since 1996, the latest limited edition Impreza offers fans the thrill of the car performance, combined with the exclusive right to life - the production is limited to 75 cars.
Listening-Cosworth, a turbo car is one of the most sedans acceleration. The familiar 2.5-liter engine turbocharged 'boxer' is converted to produce the force by 33 percent more than Cosworth relies heavily on extensive experience in Formula 1. The engine that drives all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, and boasts an impressive 400 hp and the new model reaches 62 km / h in just 3.7 seconds, going on to cover the quarter mile in 12, 75 seconds at a terminal velocity of 107 km / h. The maximum speed is limited to 155 mph.
Marketed only in the right hand drive form in the United Kingdom, the Subaru Impreza STI Cosworth CS400 is available in a choice of three exterior colors (Spark Silver, dark gray, and the San Remo Red), and is priced at £ 49 995 on -the-road.
The engine delivers 33 percent power hike
At the heart of the new Subaru Impreza Cosworth is a heavily revised version of the famous mark horizontally, on the contrary, all-aluminum boxer engine. A single exhaust system was developed to allow the engine to "breathe" more easily and release their full potential. Increased capacity of collectors and downpipes tubular diameter in order to accelerate the elimination of hot gases. The first catalyst is a non-restrictive design and exhausts to the exhaust note of a single tone.
After the update in-depth performance Cosworth, with a new computer map, the boxer engine in the CS400 produces 33 percent more horsepower (400 hp at 5,750 rpm vs. 300 hp at 6000 rpm for standard Subaru Impreza WRX STI) and 542 Nm of torque, while remaining within the limits of torque to the design capacity of the original transmission Impreza.
Manual transmission and all wheel drive
To handle the increase in power-tuned Cosworth engine, gearbox Subaru Impreza STI six-speed manual, which is synchronized carbon applied to the top three ratios and a short-range clutch to accelerate change.

Fine Suspension
Improve management of the Cosworth Subaru Impreza, steering feel and driver feedback - without compromising ride comfort - it was a priority for the development team.
Subaru have available the original suspension and main components, Cosworth and a team of engineers worked with Bilstein Eibach Chassis and technicians to design a tour package / handling / director, who was perfectly suited to the improved performance of the new model.
Eibach springs and Bilstein Special new inserts with unique features of depreciation, were made to the specifications of Cosworth. The ride height has been lowered 10 mm front.
The advantages of this reduction is twofold. First, there is a big improvement in ride quality in general, the Impreza's easy to live with day to day. Secondly, the limit behavior in more focused and serene. Improved damping means less pitch and roll when cornering at the corners, which means that drivers who wish may return to the office early and get the most out of the car Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive.
Update "racing" brake to improve braking power
To match the new Subaru Impreza Cosworth super pace, commissioned Cosworth to develop AP Racing front brakes more powerful. Larger diameter (355 mm) vented front discs have been adopted, with kettle-style racing with six-piston calipers in the personal operating larger brake pads.
The performance difference is immediately apparent. Harder pads to minimize the loss of color, which means that drivers can rely on AP plugs actually slow down time and time again.
The standard Subaru Impreza WRX STI rear brake discs, brake balance and all of the ABS home has been preserved.
"Stand-out" looks, plus new style wheels
The excellent performance of the Cosworth Subaru Impreza is reflected in its "stand-out appearance and standard xenon headlights. The lowered ride height and wider track gives the car a whole new attitude that is reinforced by a new front bumper, new fog lights, upper and lower mesh grilles and a new rear spoiler.
Discreet Cosworth badge conducted in the lower front grille, front seats, calipers and pads. The individually numbered plates are mounted on the engine and thresholds. Each of the Subaru Impreza STI Cosworth CS400 with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
Despite alloy wheels the new model are very similar in size to the regular Impreza WRX STI model - 18 x 8.5 inches - which are lighter and stronger. These wheels have an offset of 43 mm (standard STD scroll wheel is 55 mm) and extend the track by 12 mm - improving handling and filling the wheel arches of the car more efficiently for a position more aggressive.
The new wheels are equipped with high performance, low-profile Michelin tires SP3 chosen for their traction on dry and wet, durability and low noise. Tire size is 245/40 R18 and sculpture is directional.
Interior modifications and equipment prices generous
Inside, new front Recaro sport seats, rear seats and steering wheel are re-branded black leather-trimmed Cosworth. Also distinguish the CS400 is the piano black center console and accent finishes, and installation of tinted glass.
